RE: Ford F 550

Hey let's face it...Tim Allen would give an extra ugh...ugh!!! To the F550! The truck is the ultimate....Mine is an 04, and its still purring. I use it for my camper, I tow a 27 foot off shore boat, and a 10000lb travel trailer with it. I haven't found anything it won't do. Haven't seen the 08's yet, but they have to be great. I heard they use a lot of fuel though, with the twin turbos. My rig was in for service last week, and the mechanic called a Ford engineer about an issue he was having. The engineer remembered my truck, because it was the first F550 to come out of the factory in 04 that had the Lariet package and the upfitted bed. Hey...I might have broken some new ground there! I will never get rid of this truck. In fact, if my motor ever takes a major dump, I found an outfit in Montanna that does Cummins / Ford conversions. The best of both worlds!

Mine was installed by Roll-A-Long...I'm not sure they are in business any more, but they did a nice job. Whoa! A srw 550? Are you sure? What would be the point of that?!

RE: Upgrading Drawer Sliders

Yep..Just had a cabinet maker replace all the guides yesterday as a matter of fact. Haven't had a chance to look at them yet, but I will today. He used a marine style drawer guide with roller bearings. The drawer requires 20lb pull to open. Will post the details after I find out what he used exactly.

RE: Talk me out of going over to the Darkside.

I really like the lay out...I wouldn't be interested unless I could get diesel with 4x4. That was the main reason I went with my current rig. I like 4x4 and the power of the diesel.

Truck Camper Sales Scam

I've had my camper on a number of rv sales websites, with a few legitimate querys. Got this one the other day, and couldn't believe they are still using it. Called the Attorney General in the state where the business is "supposed" to be, and found that it doesn't exist, and the phone number they gave me was from off shore somewhere, probably Nigeria. Nothing much can be done about these, except to be aware of them, and not respond back.
Thank you for your response. After discussing with my client concerning your reply to our inquiry on your rv's condition ,and considering the timing/purpose of this purchase which is already at hand. Am happy to tell you that he is really satisfied with the details of your response, and the rv's condition update from the Rvs.com ad.. To that effect he has commended your rv and has instructed me to carry on the transaction at the price of $15,000.
He said he will be going on a business trip soon and will rest virtually all the transaction on my shoulder and assign a shipper like wise that i will work with,he further stressed that he will be issuing out a cashier check of ($24,000) which was an earlier canceled order made by him, this amount is expected to cover both the shipping and any other expenses that might accrue in the course of this transaction.
So you are required to deduct the cost of your rv which is ($15,000) and then refund balance which is ($9,000) to my clients pickup agent and shipper after payment gets to you to enable him come for inspection /pick-up,transfer of title paper and other tax charges.
Confirm arrangement and send me your NAME,ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER for check payment to be delivered to you via fedex courier services .All other information needed in completion of this transaction will be given to you in due time.
Sincerely,
The follow up to the first one:
Thanks for the timely response. I have reached my client in regards to your response to our inquiry on your rv and he is really interested to purchase this rv considering the fact that it will serve as a wedding present to his son very soon! with emphasis on the above reason ,this purchase needs to be completed as soon as possible, and rv in good condition as you have advertised to suit this occasion.
Please confirm the following for me :
1.Have this rv ever had any serious problem?
2. Do you have a clear title on it ?
3. Confirm your last asking price ?
I will be waiting for the above answers to proceed, especially the non-negotiable price. My client will be traveling on a business trip shortly and will love to have all the necessary details to effect purchase if it comes out satisfactory.
Have a nice day.
The e-mails were actually sent out of sequence. The second one should have been sent first...duh!
One of the ways we can stop these A'''''''s is to spread the word as much as possible that they are still out there pulling this type of thing.

RE: LP tank covers

Poly will last longer. You will be replacing the soft covers. If you have 40lb tanks instead of 30lb, I'm not sure you can get the poly covers. Also, the poly is a lot easier to remove and replace when it is very cold outside. The vinyl gets hard and shrinks.

RE: Am I Nuts or What?!!

My suggestion would be to cut over to the coast and go down hwy 101. That's what we do this time of the year if I even think there is the slighest possibility of snow. Take hwy 38 over to Reedsport, then down. If you want to cut back to I-5 after the passes, use Hwy 20 down near Eureka. We do it all the time. Not a bad drive, and a lot more scenic.

RE: Brake controller

I would suggest you seriously look at the Hensley Tru Control...It is probably more expensive than some, but it is basically plug and play. Set it once and you will not have to mess with it again, unless you change trailers.

RE: Lance Kool-aid drinkers need not enter

Obviously, the photographs speak much louder than anything you could say. Having owned two Lance campers (still have an 1121) I'm really surprized at the poor fit and finish that came out on this one. I think Lance really dropped the ball on this particular unit. The propane door was careless on your part, but the rest are valid points. I'm also surprized at Lance's response. It's not characteristic of them from my experience. I recently purchased a travel trailer which fortunately had very few issues, but I'm still paying a cabinet maker to upgrade all the drawer guides, because I know making them a warrnty issue will only get me the same junk they used in the first place. Some things will never be to your standards and I understand completely, as I'm the same way in many respects. Pride of craftsmanship in this country is becoming more rare every day. Finding skilled labor is also difficult. With your eye for detail, I have to wonder why you didn't see a lot of the cosmetic problems at the time you were taking delivery. It's too late now, but a good PDI probably would have resulted in you not accepting delivery. Anyway, sorry about your frustration. Best advice I have, is to get them to fix whatever they will fix, fix the rest yourself or have them fixed, and get back to camping. Once you get the little stuff fixed, I think you will come to appreciate the strong and more positive things about your rig. Good luck!

RE: West Marine Dehumidifier

I have four of these. One in the camper, one in the travel trailer and two on board my boat which is moored year around. I started with the boat originally, and found they were so effective, I got them for the RV's. They work! A boat cabin normally smells damp and musty after being closed up for awhile. Our cabin is always dry, with no odors. I don't know how they work, and don't care. All our rigs sit outside year around right on the Oregon Coast. The beach is about 500 yards from the house, which can be a pretty harsh at times.

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Good grief Steve! That is one unbelievable hitch! Enjoyed the pics on the new page also. Much better than the PR website for getting an idea how the hitch works. Unfortunately, the hitch would not be a practical upgrade for me. They don't make one for my truck. The F550 commercial chassis frame is not even remotely the same as the F350. Second, my fuel tank is aft of the rear axle in the exactly the same location as the spare tire normally sits. I would need some serious fabrication work done to get it mounted and still retain my fuel tank. I had my spare on the front receiver hitch until I had to replace the EGR cooler. I was told by Ford the location of the tire might have been a factor in the cooler going out, so I moved it into the truck bed. The jury is still out on that though, and I may move it back. Anyway, after reading about TV movement with the Hensley, it ocurred to me that I have never experienced that, even with agressive driving in turns. It may have to do with my particular truck. The 9600lbs and dual rear wheel make it pretty hard to move. I can hear the hitch shifting side to side, and feel a slight clunk on tight turns, but that has pretty much been the extent of it. Back to the original poster...Don't get the idea that all Hensley owners want to upgrade. Steve is doing it because he's a perfectionist! If there is a better mouse trap out there he will find it! What really surprizes me however, is the fact he's still using a drill to move the stabilizer jacks, when he could be pressing a button!;)

RE: unable to load due to weather? For how long?

That is certainly one of the downsides to having a truck camper. We were stranded on the Gulf of Mexico one year, for almost two weeks because of the high winds. After ten years of overhead campers, we've learned that if you plan on loading and unloading, you check the weather reports ahead of time like a sailor.

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Hey Steve...The PullRite looks interesting, but if you carry a spare tire, or like me, have a large fuel tank there, will it still work? Do you know if they have one designed for an F550 chassis frame?

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

I just wanted to add a couple more things...Don't waste your money on the Hensley cover. Go to Walmart or somewhere like that and buy a large barbeque cover and some bungee cords. Covers much better than the Hensley cover, and a LOT cheaper. Second, make sure you buy their "hitch helper". This litle device saves a lot of time when you are hitching, and makes the whole process very easy.

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

I have a Hensey. And yes, they are more expensive than most other hitchs, if not the "most" expensive. I won't put down other brands or designs because I have nothing to compare with. I've only used the Hensley. My logic, for buying the hitch was based on the investment I had in my truck and trailer. I did a lot of research on the most popular hitches, looking for the safest hitch that would eliminate the most problems. I pull a 10,000lb trailer with an F550. With the Hensley, the entire rig handles as one unit. Solid, stable, and without any type of sway. In fact, I have to be careful to keep my speed down, because the stability has a tendancy to lure you into higher speeds and more agressive handling. As far as hitching and unhitching, the only time I ever had problems, was because I tried to take a short cut, or not follow the directions. Because of its engineering, there is a learning curve you have to get over, but it only requires following the directions three or four times before it becomes second nature. Since everything stays attached to the trailer, you aren't handling heavy distribution bars, or trying to find a place to keep them. I've read where some people got frustrated and returned them (very few), but then not everyone can put a square peg in a square hole. Did I want to spend the money? No..but it was a great investment.

RE: Under Sofa Storage

Our Artic Fox has storage under the sofa, but it can be accessed both from the outside or the inside. The inside panel is held with velcro. We use the space for outside items and have yet to remove the inside panel. TT's have very little outside storage as it is, so you might think about putting an outside hatch there. We had the option of getting a hide a bed or the jack knife sofa. We woud have lost the storage with the hide a bed.

RE: Washing RV with car wash and lamp oil?

Never heard that before...We have an 04 Lance and an 08 Arctic Fox trailer. I have been using the Turtle Wax car washing soap since we bought the Lance. I have never hand waxed the Lance, but it always looks as if it was just waxed. Lamp oil is essentially kerosene..which is a good solvent...maybe that's why it cleans well..I would make sure it wouldn't attack the caulking or rubber before I considered it.

RE: lance storm windows

I have a set for my 1121.. The engineering (or lack of) design that holds the windows on is really poor. There were such a PITA to put on and take off, I finally quit using them. In our TT, we have thermopane windows which are far superior. Our Lance is an 04 model. Maybe they have improved the design since then. Once the windows are up, they do help to insulate.
